C o n c l u s i o n ( Civic Responsibilty & Personal Growth)

Through the Service Learning, I realised that the time that I spent during the three sessions with the students, was something that the students really appreciated. The students came from a low-income family hence, the might not actually have many occasions where they get to spend time with their parents as their parents would be busy working to support the family. Hence, the time that we spend with them, to not only conduct activities but to show care and concern to them, is something that they deeply appreciated as it can be seen through their actions whenever they see us and they were sad after our last session, after we gave out the handwritten cards. Moreover, tackling the issue requires time as it is long-term but I believe that by including myself more in such opportunities to serve would be a stepping stone to tackling the issue. During the session, there is a student who would always follow me around and always whisper to me that he was always happy to see me and during the last session he asked, “When will I see you again? What if I forget you?”, I was shocked as I did not think the time I spent with them would make a difference to them and it was very heart-warming to know that my presence had made an impact to his life. Hence, just through that moment, I concluded that a contribution, big or small, would always have an impact to those that matter. Therefore, I believe that this feeling that I felt could be experienced by anyone if they take the step to take on volunteering work. To me, it’s never about how much we receive after such events as receiving is secondary but it is about giving back to the community.
